U14s narrow loss to Barking

U14s narrow loss to Barking

Niall Hornett7 Mar 2022 - 19:41

Lots of encouraging signs, especially as the side was depleted through injuries

Barking 33 - Woodburn 25
This week with a very depleted team due to injury we visited Barking for a friendly. As we only had 14 players Barking kindly lent us a player, Tom.
With many players missing we had to try players in different positions with a flanker playing centre, and winger playing scrum half.
As it was a friendly, we played the game in 4 quarters.
The first quarter was a close affair with both teams showing good defence and speed in the wings the full backs had their work cut out. At the end of the first quarter the score was still 0-0
The second quarter was a little different with an early penalty Joe Ba put some points on the board for Woodburn then just before the end of the first half Joe Ba scored and converted Woodburn’s first try. Unfortunately, this was quickly followed by a Barking try. End of the first half Barking 7-10 Woodburn.
With the wind now against us kicking would be harder however a penalty at the start of the third quarter allowed Joe B to score another penalty. This was quickly followed by a great run the length of the pitch by Barking scoring a try which was converted 14-13, Woodburn’s lost the lead.
Fast backs on the Barking side meant that Woodburn needed to make a change switching a flanker (Jayden) to the wing. This proved effective enabling him to score a try running from the halfway line for Woodburn to retake the lead 14-18. A mix up in the Woodburn’s backs meant that just before the end of the third quarter Barking had a 5m line out from which they managed to score a try but not convert. End of the third quarter 19-18.
The fourth and final quarter was a different affair with three tries scored as players got tired. Barking scoring and converting the first quickly followed by a Woodburn play to the wing allowing Jayden freedom to run and score for Woodburn, converted by Joe Ba. 26-25 with a minute to go, Barking had the ball on the right wing tackled by Jayden the ball was popped to Barking’s full back Ryan who managed to run forward and across the pitch handoff a number of tackles before scoring a wonderful try which was converted in the final kick of the game. Final Score 33-25.
Barking were great hosts.
Barking nominated Joe Be as man of the match for great jackaling on the ball, our Barking player of the match was Ryan (No15) for great support work and attacking play.
Brandon as scrum half for the first time was Woodburn’s man of the match.
