The Burnham U9s rugby team took to the StoneX Stadium, home of Saracens, for a day to remember. Battling not only tough opposition but also some of the toughest weather conditions imaginable, the team once again showcased their incredible talent and resilience.
The day kicked off with a clash against familiar foes, Rochford. It was a slow start for Burnham in the freezing cold, howling winds, and relentless rain. Despite the slow acclimatization, it was reassuring to face a team they knew well as they adjusted to the appalling conditions. As the match progressed, the team began to find their rhythm, displaying glimpses of their signature tough tackling and explosive counter-attacking style.
With momentum building, Burnham then faced Tring followed by Old Grammarians, a team that matched their intensity and tackling ability from the outset. For a brief moment, it seemed Burnham might have met their match. However, these remarkable young players dug deep and shifted into a higher gear nobody knew they had, producing a breathtaking performance that defied both the elements and expectations. In one of their best displays to date, the Burnham U9s turned the tide against Old Grammarians, dominating the game with grit, skill, and determination.
Throughout the day, Burnham’s U9s exemplified the qualities that make this team so special. Despite the freezing cold, gale-force winds, and torrential rain, they applied themselves with unwavering commitment and represented their club with pride. Smiles on their faces and perfect TREDS (Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, and Sportsmanship) were ever-present.
The team deserves huge credit for their efforts, both on and off the pitch. Against tough opposition and in the toughest of conditions, they delivered another brilliant showing, proving once again why they are The Mighty Burnham U9s!
Katherine couldn’t pick a Player of the Tournament as every single one of the them played out of their skin, “I’m so proud of all the players who worked so hard in the hideous weather for that length of time.”
The team stayed on to watch Saracens beat the Bulls in the Champions Cup 27-5. Despite a strong performance from Sarries the Burnham U9s were still the best team to have played on the pitch that day.
